Broadcasters RTVE (Spain) and France Televisions are preparing to begin delivering Ultra High-Definition content to viewers on digital terrestrial television (DTT). Spain’s RTVE has announced plans to launch a new UHD channel on February 15th, 2024.
The state broadcaster said its board of directors have reached an agreement on the launch following a number of tests. Last year RTVE broadcast 20 games from the FIFA World Cup in 4K HDR on its free-to-air channel.
RTVE said it will continue to broadcast content in SD until the new channel officially launches.
Meanwhile, French media regulator Arcom has revealed it has been given the go-ahead by the government to allow France Televisions to broadcast France 2 and France 3 in UHD, over a large part of mainland France and nine overseas territories, from 2024.
The regulator added that other broadcasters have also expressed an interest in broadcasting in UHD from next year.
Arcom said it intends to deploy a new multiplex in order to meet the broadcasters’ requirements and has launched a public consultation to investigate how many UHD services it could deliver.
