Broadcast Engineering has announced the winners of its Pick Hits awards for NAB 2012. With a long history, Pick Hits are the most prestigious technical awards given at NAB. A panel of independent judges toured the show floor for three days, looking for innovative products and technology. The judges then met to make their selections based on several criteria, including the technical and financial improvements the product can bring to a facility's operation. Our editors and publishers have no vote in the selection process.

Below are the most interesting solutions on our opinion!

Panasonic - BT-LH2170

Panasonic has introduced the BT-LH2170, an 21.5” LCD production monitor with native 1920 x 1080 HD resolution, advanced 3D assist features and significant advances in functionality.

Advanced features new to the LH2170 are an in-monitor display; a Y-Map display that makes it easy to confirm luminance level map; a Zebra display that is the same function that a pro camera utilizes to detect the level over or assigned in between level portion; and a two-window display that can be used in combination with the Y-Map or Zebra displays. The LH2170 will display closed captions with an SDI or video input; it supports the EIA/CEA-708 and EIA/CEA-608 SD-SDI closed captioning standards.

Canon - EOS C500 camera

The EOS C500 offers a Super 35mm, 8.85-megapixel CMOS image sensor, our DIGIC DV III Image Processor and an expansive range of recording and output options specifically for 4K, 2K and HD image acquisition. It is available with either PL- or EF- mount options.

For 4K and 2K recording, uncompressed output is delivered to external recording systems via built-in dual 3G SDI ports. Dual HD-SDI monitor outputs support external live monitoring. Simultaneously, HD content can be written to dual onboard CF cards to provide proxy video for offline NLE systems.

JVC - HM650 camera

JVC has ushered in a new era of mobile newsgathering with its new GY-HM650 ProHD handheld mobile news camera, which can shoot and deliver news footage faster than ever. Equipped with dual codecs, it produces full HD files on one memory card while simultaneously creating smaller, Web-friendly files (1/4 HD) on a second card. With built-in FTP and Wi-Fi connectivity, the GY-HM650 delivers the footage back to a station without a microwave or satellite connection.

Everts - 7812 converter

The 7812UDX-HD and 7812UDX-AES8-HD are Broadcast Quality Up/Down/Cross Converters that convert between common SD/SMPTE ST 259 and HD/SMPTE ST 292-1 video signals. -3G versions add support for common 3G/SMPTE ST 424 video signals. These modules support frame synchronization and external genlock inputs (card and frame reference) for video timing adjustments.

The 7812UDX series incorporates Mosquito Noise Reduction (MNR) and Block Artifact Reduction (BAR) in addition to motion adaptive spatial-temporal (3D) noise reduction. The 7812UDX series also incorporates new de-interlacing technologies for superior resolution and artifact reduction.

Snell - Vega switcher

At the 2012 NAB Show, Snell unveiled a new 4-RU version of its award-winning Vega™ routing platform. Allowing users to configure any signal port independently for fiber or coax (copper) connectivity, and enabling any port to be configured as either an input or output, Vega offers the industry's most flexible asymmetric routing solution, now within a 192-port design.

The fully asymmetric I/O port designation of the Vega routing platform enables users to configure the router with just one input and 191 outputs, 191 inputs and one output, or any combination in between. The system leverages proprietary algorithms to monitor every subassembly continuously. To ensure maximum redundancy, it offers a full range of options — dual crosspoints, dual controllers, dual power supplies, and dual fans — all of which are hot-pluggable or replaceable.

Cobalt - LMNTS-1000

LMNTS (Loudness Management for n-Transport Streams) is a first in comprehensive transport-based loudness processing. LMNTS represents a quantum leap in multi-stream loudness processing integration ease, economy, confidence, and consistency. Operating at the MPEG transport layer, LMNTS provides a practical loudness management solution for MVPD operators without the need or complexity of external codecs transferring between baseband and MPEG interfaces.

LMNTS is fully scalable, with licenses available to progressively add the number of audio programs accommodated up to the maximum capacity of each 1RU engine (standard capacity is 5 audio programs).

Harris - HView SX Pro multiviewer

Harris Corporation has raised the bar in multi-display technology for live production, outside broadcast (OB) and other video/audio processing needs by introducing HView™ SX Pro — the broadcast industry's most scalable, highest-density multi-display management system.

The HView SX Pro extends Harris' HView multiviewer range, delivering a compact new signal processing and monitoring option for control room environments. Its advanced design is smaller, sharper and smarter than competitive solutions — reducing space, power and complexity while offering superior picture quality and intelligent, flexible control options. Its high-density design accommodates more sources and outputs in fewer rack units to reduce system and installation costs.

Miranda - LUMO fiber system

Miranda Technologies, a worldwide provider of infrastructure, playout and monitoring systems, has launched LUMO, the company's new high-density fibre converter series. LUMO’s modular design enables each converter to be serviced while the unit remains in operation. The unit also includes dual redundant power supplies and frame controller with dual redundant IP-connections that can be used for comprehensive system monitoring and frame health alarming.

Blackmagic - Cinema Camera

Blackmagic Cinema Camera features an amazing 2.5K image sensor with a wide 13 stops of dynamic range for a true digital film camera. You get a built-in SSD recorder, popular open standard uncompressed RAW and compressed file formats, compatibility with quality EF and ZE mount lenses, LCD touchscreen monitoring plus metadata entry, all packed into an exciting hand held design.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera features a high resolution sensor with wide dynamic range so it’s perfect for independent film, television commercials and episodic television production. DaVinci Resolve software for Mac™ and Windows™ is included so you can work at the highest quality and get the best results. Blackmagic Cinema Camera is both affordable and a complete solution because it includes a built-in recorder and monitoring, so it’s perfect for displacing video-only cameras for work such as sporting events, weddings, music videos and more.

AJA - Ki Pro Rack

AJA Video Systems announced another new product in its Ki Pro family, Ki Pro Rack, enabling recording of high-quality, edit-ready files for the fastest path from camera to edit in a new 1RU rack mount form factor.Ki Pro Rack uses the same SSD or spinning disk storage modules as the Ki Pro with recording capacities scaling up to 500GB. Ki Pro Rack simplifies the acquisition-to-edit workflow by creating high-quality Apple ProRes 422 or Avid DNxHD files which can be used directly in most standard professional editing systems without the need to import or transcode files.
