New Descript’s AI-Eye Contact feature helps to read the script without teleprompter and to be in eye contact with audience behind the camera. The main question is Will it kill the teleprompter at all? AI-Eye Contact is currently in beta so I thought I’d test it.
Teleprompter is a device that since the 1950s has had the main purpose to allow reading a script through a translucent glass directly to the lens. Now the AI Eye Contact from Descript is challenging that, at least for pre-recorded videos.
On the Descript’ site you can read some information about AI-Eye Contact feature. And main idea is “No teleprompter? No problem”. Now you can read off a script without worrying about memorizing it or endless mistake-and-retake loops.
There’s a reason news anchors and YouTube stars use a teleprompter — looking directly into the camera creates a more authentic, intimate connection with their audiences. With AI-Eye Contact you’ll be in touch with your audience without buying a teleprompter, or learning to use it.
Descript adds Eye Contact to your video non-destructively — so you still have the original and can toggle the effect on or off. Plus, you can apply it to parts of your video without altering the entire footage.
Conclusions
Considering that this is still a beta, this is very interesting, although I would only use it during a monologue, and deactivate it for a spontaneous interview. As we know, Descript is not a live service, so for now, it won’t kill the teleprompter for truly live content.
